imagination of an evil heart

Jeremiah 7

This chapter starts out talking about the Lord's house. We can't trust in having a place where the Lord's name is, and say, "We will be fine" even though we do horrible things just because we have that place. The Lord has destroyed places He put His name, with horrible destruction, because of their sin.

The chapter continues to talk about sacrifices, and how doing sacrifices to the Lord wouldn't do the people any good. That's because they were doing sacrifices, thinking that would help them, but they weren't listening to the Lord or following Him! They were walking in sin. Originally, the Lord didn't command the sacrifices, but He commanded obedience. (v23)

v24

But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels [and] in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.
Maybe I'm not stealing or killing, or things like that, but have I had evil imaginations in my heart? That's sin. We should make sure our thoughts are right.
