Luke 9:1-36 - Outline
20080330
in the day
v3
And it shall come to pass in the day that the LORD shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard bondage wherein thou wast made to serve,
There's a day coming when the Lord will make things better for us. We should trust in Him.
20080329
the day of the LORD
v9
Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.
The day of the Lord might be today, or it might be soon. We should think like that, and be ready.
20080328
Romans 1 - Key
v1
Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called [to be] an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
Application
Today I'll work on being "a servant of Jesus Christ".
20080327
Romans 1 - Outline
- v1-5
- we are about the gospel, the gospel is about Jesus
- v6-13
- what a servant of God desires about other people is: grace, peace, faith, a spiritual gift, establishment, comfort, faith, and fruit
- v14-16
- indebted, ready, and not ashamed, to preach the gospel
- v17
- the gospel is for righteousness by faith, for salvation
- 18-20
- salvation is needed because of the wrath of God on unrighteous people who have no excuse
- v21
- wickedness starts in our imaginations, and by us not glorifying God the way we should or being thankful
- v22-25
- idolatry is worshiping and serving the things God has created more than we worship or serve God. God allows people to do lustful things because of their idolatry. (v24)
- v26,27
- homosexuality is sin
- v28-31
- a list of unrighteous behavior
- v32
- we shouldn't have pleasure in people who do such things
20080326
Praise the LORD
v4
And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted.
This says to, "declare his doings among the people", like Luke 8:39. This is a chapter that we could use to praise the Lord.
20080325
a root of Jesse
v10
And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.
This verse is a prophesy foretelling how Jesus would come as a descendant of David (the son of Jesse), and open up the door of faith to the non-Jews. We should seek Him.
20080324
Luke 8:26-56 - Key
v39
Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.
This is what we're supposed to do.
Application
I'll tell people about the great things that the Lord has done for me.
20080323
we shouldn't be proud
v12
Wherefore it shall come to pass, [that] when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.
The Lord was warning about how He would judge the king of Assyria. The Lord was using the king of Assyria to punish Jerusalem, but the king was prideful about it. After the Lord finished with Jerusalem and mount Zion, the Lord was going to punish the king of Assyria.
We shouldn't be prideful.
20080322
Jesus is God
v6
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
We should remember that this verse is here.
20080321
Immanuel
v10
Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God [is] with us.
We can take comfort in the fact that God is with us.
20080320
believe
v9
And the head of Ephraim [is] Samaria, and the head of Samaria [is] Remaliah's son. If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established.
Today we should believe that the Lord is going to do great things.
20080319
Here am I; send me
v8
Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here [am] I; send me.
We should be willing for what the Lord wants done.
20080318
Luke 8 - Key
v16
No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth [it] under a bed; but setteth [it] on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.
The Lord has been teaching me that I shouldn't be ashamed of the gospel.
Application
When I should preach the gospel to someone, I'll keep praying for them.
20080317
evil is not good
v20
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
We shouldn't mix up what's good and what's evil. We should call them what they really are.
20080316
by the spirit of judgment
v4
When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.
There's a serious judgment for sin, even for believers. One sin is being ashamed of the gospel. We should pray and purpose to preach the gospel.
From: My Anchor Holds
By William Martin, 1902 and Daniel Towner, 1902Troubles almost ’whelm the soul; Griefs like billows o’er me roll; Tempters seek to lure astray; Storms obscure the light of day: But in Christ I can be bold, I’ve an anchor that shall hold. And it holds, my anchor holds: Blow your wildest, then, O gale, On my bark so small and frail; By His grace I shall not fail, For my anchor holds, my anchor holds.
20080315
tongue and doings against the LORD
v8
For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings [are] against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.
This verse mentions their tongue being "against the LORD". I see that I should make sure to not speak a bad way.

Job 42 - Outline
- v1-6
- Job repents
- v7-9
- Job's friends repent
- v10-12
- "the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before." (v10)
- v13-15
- Job's children
- v16-17
- the end of the story
From: My Anchor Holds
By William Martin, 1902 and Daniel Towner, 1902I can feel the anchor fast As I meet each sudden blast, And the cable, though unseen, Bears the heavy strain between; Through the storm I safely ride, Till the turning of the tide. And it holds, my anchor holds: Blow your wildest, then, O gale, On my bark so small and frail; By His grace I shall not fail, For my anchor holds, my anchor holds.
20080313
Job 42 - Key
v7
And it was [so], that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me [the thing that is] right, as my servant Job [hath].
Job spoke of the Lord rightly (even though it does seem from v3 that Job made some mistake). When things are going badly, it's tempting to not speak rightly.
Application
I'll work on saying what I should, even when I'm having a hard time.
20080312
bow down to the Lord
v11
The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.
These proud people had been bowing down to idols. Instead, we should be humble and bow to the Lord when we pray to Him.
20080311
be willing and obedient
v19
If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:
Remember, we can't get ourselves to heaven by the good things that we do. However, that doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with trying to do good things! As a matter of fact, we're supposed to. We should work on being willing and obedient.
From: My Anchor Holds
By William Martin, 1902 and Daniel Towner, 1902Mighty tides about me sweep, Perils lurk within the deep, Angry clouds o’ershade the sky, And the tempest rises high; Still I stand the tempest’s shock, For my anchor grips the rock. And it holds, my anchor holds: Blow your wildest, then, O gale, On my bark so small and frail; By His grace I shall not fail, For my anchor holds, my anchor holds.

And it holds, my anchor holds: Blow your wildest, then, O gale, On my bark so small and frail; By His grace I shall not fail, For my anchor holds, my anchor holds.

cause me to hear
v13
Thou that dwellest in the gardens, the companions hearken to thy voice: cause me to hear it.
We should pray for the Lord to help us "hear His voice".
From: Marching to Zion
By Isaac Watts, 1707 and Robert Lowry, 1867Then let our songs abound, And every tear be dry; We’re marching through Immanuel’s ground, We’re marching through Immanuel’s ground, To fairer worlds on high, To fairer worlds on high. We’re marching to Zion, Beautiful, beautiful Zion; We’re marching upward to Zion, The beautiful city of God.
20080308
God loves us
v10
I [am] my beloved's, and his desire [is] toward me.
I know that "God loves us" can sound so old and meaningless, but it shouldn't be, and we should really think about what it means.
I've been working on having a more cheerful look on my face and a more cheerful tone of voice. We can be encouraged about the Lord's love for us.
20080307
Job 41 - Key
v34
He beholdeth all high [things]: he [is] a king over all the children of pride.
This verse is talking about a sea monster too strong for us approach, but that God is great enough to control. It says about the monster, that "he [is] a king over all the children of pride."
One of our friends was studying Job. I asked him what he was learning, and he said to not be proud. As I thought about it, I realized that this is a major point in this book. We shouldn't be proud.
From: Marching to Zion
By Isaac Watts, 1707 and Robert Lowry, 1867The hill of Zion yields A thousand sacred sweets Before we reach the heav’nly fields, Before we reach the heav’nly fields, Or walk the golden streets, Or walk the golden streets. We’re marching to Zion, Beautiful, beautiful Zion; We’re marching upward to Zion, The beautiful city of God.

Luke 7 - Key
v7
Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.
We should have this kind of faith in who the Lord is compared to us, and what His Word can do.
Application
I'll ask the Lord for promises when I'm seeking Him.
From: Redeemed, How I Love to Proclaim It!
By Fanny Crosby, in 1882 and William KirkpatrickI know there’s a crown that is waiting, In yonder bright mansion for me, And soon, with the spirits made perfect, At home with the Lord I shall be. Redeemed, redeemed, Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb; Redeemed, redeemed, His child and forever I am.

20080302
thy beloved
v1
Whither is thy beloved gone, O thou fairest among women? whither is thy beloved turned aside? that we may seek him with thee.
This says, "thy beloved". We should base our decisions about what we're going to do, on our love for the Lord.
From: Redeemed, How I Love to Proclaim It!
By Fanny Crosby, in 1882 and William KirkpatrickRedeemed, and so happy in Jesus, No language my rapture can tell; I know that the light of His presence With me doth continually dwell. Redeemed, redeemed, Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb; Redeemed, redeemed, His child and forever I am.

seek the Lord
v6
I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, [and] was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.
If we love the Lord, we should seek Him.
