idolatry is spiritual adultery

Hosea 3

v1

Then said the LORD unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of [her] friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the LORD toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine.

Hosea compares idols to adultery. God and His people are like a marriage, so his people looking to other "gods" is like adultery. This makes me think about some idols we can have, by wasting time like:

  • sleeping in
  • bad thinking
  • watching too many videos

Wasting time is idolatry because it gives our time, thoughts, and other resources, to serve other things instead of the Lord. We know that adultery is a wicked sin that we should never commit, but Hosea is teaching that idolatry is the same.

Colossians 4:5

Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.
(I added the emphasis.)
