Genesis 27 - Key

v4

And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring [it] to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die.

I think it's interesting that Isaac said, that my soul may bless thee. I thought of how we bless and worship the Lord.

John 4:23,24
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
God [is] a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth.

I looked at this two ways. First of all, when we worship the Lord, it should be sincere, from our hearts. Isaac wanted to eat some good food from someone so he could bless him from deep down inside. Sometimes when a believer prepares food, while I'm eating it, and it's delicious, a gratitude and blessing to them just wells up from deep down inside of me, and if I were to voice thanksgiving or gratitude to them for it, it would really be from my heart. We should worship the Lord that way.

On the other hand, we, like Isaac, can be too focused on outward feelings. Isaac felt the goatskins on Jacob's hands, and smelled Esau's coat that Jacob was wearing, and he blessed Jacob because he tasted the food and it tasted good. Because of going by outward feelings, Isaac ended up being deceived, so that he wasn't even blessing who he thought he was. We shouldn't be too focused on feelings, or we could be deceived like Isaac was.

v22
And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice [is] Jacob's voice, but the hands [are] the hands of Esau.

Primarily, we should know the Lord's voice, and go by that. Sometimes doing what's right doesn't make us feel good. We should do what we know is right, from the Lord's Word, despite how we feel.

Application

We have an awesome opportunity in our meetings, that most other people don't have, that any of the guys can get up and worship the Lord out loud. That's a great thing that we should keep doing, but it shouldn't be like a meaningless repetition. When I worship the Lord, out loud, I'll work on making sure I do it sincerely, from my heart.

  1. Thanks for the good work. Please note its not Jacob who was deceived as you have written on the text of the food issue. It was Isaac who was deceived.
