call upon the Lord

Psalm 118

v5

I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, [and set me] in a large place.

I knew that Psalms talked a lot about praising the Lord, but this time I'm studying Psalms, I'm surprised how much Psalms talks about prayer.

This verse says, "I called upon the Lord in distress..." When we are frustrated or discouraged, we should pray.

From: What a Friend We Have in Jesus

By Joseph Scriven, 1855 and Charles Converse, 1868
What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.

Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer.
